Okay, so how many laptops can you find with a 15.6" screen, 1080p resolution, and a decent graphics chipset for under $1000? Not many! This laptop met all three of these needs for me. It came with enough RAM that I don't need to upgrade it until the 8GB of SODIMM modules become ridiculously cheap. The video chipset M96XT (AKA Radeon 4670) has pretty decent performance [...]. There are just way too many other laptops out there that have 1080p screens and an Intel GMA chipset, or low resolution 1280x800 screens with decent video chipsets. This laptop has both high resolution and a good chipset.
I recently took it to a LAN party to play Team Fortress 2 and it ran beautifully with all the settings turned up to high (60fps+). My last laptop died because the CFL backlight failed, with the LED backlight that should never be a problem. It's also super bright. I usually have it set to a quarter of the brightness and it's still pretty bright.
If you don't like the disk I/O speed (I think it's fine) you can always put a SSD in this as it's a standard SATA disk drive. There are USB ports on the left AND one eSATA/USB on the right, so you can use either one.
My laptop actually did have a gigabit network adapter (not the 10/100 listed here) but no jumbo frames support :( Typical with Broadcom.
Oh, and Windows 7, 64bit is amazing. You have the full 4GB of system memory and 1GB of video.
Cons?:
No scroll lock button, no pause/break button. Not sure how if there is some hidden Fn shortcut to get these. But who uses these really? There's no Fn num-pad, but really, I never used that. The wireless enable/disable switch is a capacitive touch button right above the keyboard. It's easy to accidentally hit it and turn the wireless off and not realize it.

Purchased this computer a few weeks ago for my son who is heading to college and we have been very happy with it. Sleek, responsive, and able to handle gaming and media applications with the well-above-average video card, memory, display and processor combination. All for under $1000.00? Impressive. A fingerprint magnet, which bothers some, but is not a big deal to me. Battery life is average compared to the other laptops I have owned, but acceptable, and I am confident, but admittedly have not looked, that an aftermarket upgrade at battery is available. I have seen complaints that it runs hot, but have not experienced that, at least not hotter than any other laptop with a dedicated video card running during intensive applications and certainly not uncomfortably so. The fan is partially blocked by the monitor, but does its job, and for long sessions of gaming I would recommend a secondary cooling device for any laptop. I have also seen at least one review indicate that the video card was not good for gaming, but other independent reviews of the specific card and pc configuration, and my own experiences, refute that, this pc was built with demanding gaming in mind, while not sacrificing portability or versatility.
I have only one beef with the purchase. Amazon no longer price guarantees its products. This machine dropped in price $35.00 shortly after I purchased it (within a week). I still had it, unopened, and contacted Amazon about a price credit, and was basically told to pound sand. The most frustrating thing about that was I could have simply returned it for a full refund under the 30 day return policy for unopened computers, and bought another one at the new price, discounting my price savings by the 15 dollars or so in return shipping costs (I do not think the return policy covers that), and when I pointed that out to Amazon, I was invited to go ahead and do that. To me, it appeared Amazon was effectively banking on the fact that I would not go through such hassle for such a "small" savings. And they were correct, but only because I did not want to be empty handed for my son's 18th birthday. So they won my business with a good price on a great machine, but lost my respect as a company for such poor customer service. I make many internet purchases, and absent a serious reason to do so, will not be shopping at Amazon in the future.
EDIT REVIEW - after I wrote this it got me worked up all over again so I contacted Amazon a second time and low and behold I was given a 35 dollar credit! While they deserved the smack on the nose with a rolled up paper they got for how I was treated the first time, they likewise deserve a treat and an attaboy for eventually doing the right thing. Amazon you have won back my business.

The computer itself is a nice upgrade from the N5010, but the lack of a Synapsis touch pad is really killing the usability. You no longer have the options like "Momentum Scrolling" or "Tap Zones" or an easy middle click. The Dell drivers are pretty low on features unlike the Synapsis. With this computer, there is an option for a middle click, but it is nearly impossible as you must hit both (left and right) buttons at the same time. I had a lot of practice, but it is still super hard to actually make it middle click and not left click. If there's a way to middle click on the touch part, I'm all ears.
Had the machine for 4 weeks so far, will have an update in the future.
Good:
Processor and video upgrade.
Fan is not as quiet as on some Apples, but so far it does not disturb a completely quiet classroom when playing Hulu.
Vibrates quite a lot if kept on for more than a couple hours.
Video playback is great, plays HD videos smoothly. Crysis 2 plays great over an external HDMI monitor.
Option to enable/disable automatic Fn key row.
USB 3.0 works awesome if you have a 3.0 device. My ext. HDD has 3.0 and transfer time for 4.5GB was cut significantly.
Bad:
Touch pad buttons lack easy middle click and simple features that were present on earlier models and in HP, Vaio, and pretty much on all computers I have had since 2008.
Screen reflects quite a lot, but that's nothing new.
Ugly: Fingerprints are everywhere.
Primary Use: Student, Matlab, Inventor, MS Office, stream vids.

I can't remember the specifics of the older model Dell laptop I had for four years, but I loved it ; it treated me well. The only reason I bought a new one was because the hard drive popped out of the old one, ; before I realized it could just be popped back in I had already ordered the 1525.
This computer is like an $800 headache. I don't even care that it came with Vista, because honestly it hasn't given me that many problems ; I'm not picky about my operating platform, so long as it gets the job done. (Although, I will say, it comes with a completely useless graphics driver, ; I had to downgrade to the previous edition of the driver to get basic games to run.) I've been lucky ; haven't had the battery or trackpad problems everybody else complains about. But even as one of the "lucky" ones, I'd had to deal with my fair share of crap from this model.
1. The left mouse button is permanently stuck in the down position. It still functions, but it doesn't have that satisfying "click" that mouse buttons are supposed to have. This may sound like a superficial problem, but it's not. You want to know when you've clicked the mouse. As far as I can tell from browsing message boards ; forums, everybody who has this computer has this problem. As an Inspiron 1525 owner, it's something you'll just come to accept.
2. Like many people have noted, it gets hot. Dangerously hot. Not a "lap" top.
3. The screen! Bane of my existence!
a. First of all, there's no clasp or magnets to ANYTHING to hold the screen down when it's closed. What's up with that, Dell? If you're carrying your laptop in a bag or something the screen just flops around, bouncing as it pleases off the keyboard. Well, you know... WHO EXPECTS LAPTOPS TO BE PORTABLE ANYWAY?
b. MAJOR MAJOR HINGE PROBLEMS. I've just spent the last week of my life without a computer at all because I had to order new hinges. The screws holding the display together are so weak ; the plastic so flimsy that the metal hinges work themselves out of alignment in no time, causing the laptop to give a mighty CRACK when you open it ; eventually causing the metal hinge to become exposed ;, in my case, non-functional. This can be dangerous, as the trauma caused by the cracking or hinge popping out can crack the screen. Luckily, my screen was unaffected. But I had to take the whole display apart myself ; replace the stupid hinges. Now it's working fine, better than it did when I got it actually -- makes me wonder if the people at Dell even bothered to screw the hinges in all the way or not. But I know this problem will resurface again in no time ; need constant surveillance ; maintenance. Who needs a laptop they're going to have to dissect every six months? It's ludicrous.
You know, I'm absolutely not a picky person. I'm just a regular chick who needs a laptop for work, school, ; play. I'm not some tech geek who feels it's my job to complain about every flaw in a gadget in order to make myself feel superior. I am the Everyman. I don't know anything about laptops. All I know is that I have had this computer for a little over a year (ONE YEAR, A SINGLE MEASLY YEAR) ; it has caused me nothing but stress. When I buy an expensive electronic, I expect it to work, ; not to break until I've dropped it or at least gotten a few good years of use out of it. I don't have money to throw around on upgrades or new equipment. No matter how low the price, this laptop just isn't worth the time, money, or trouble. It's a big, overheating, screen-cracking, mouse-malfunctioning, bulky piece of junk.

Dell has had problems with this line of laptops. Although you have many features and seemingly high end components, you will be disappointed with performance.
Primarily, you will be very dissatisfied with:
- the trackpad pointer, which is erratic and buggy for which Dell has no fixes, nor are any forthcoming
- the CD/DVD tray phantom ejection problem, which is also well documented by users on Dell's own customer web site; again no fix forthcoming
- loads of adware/Dell-promos which get annoying and will make you wipe your HDD to start fresh.
Avoid the Inspiron line altogether. Dell has dropped the ball completely here.
Disclaimer: I currently have a higher end Dell Inspiron with a full Core2Duo/250GB/3GB. I have tried to use the Dell/Best Buy Geek Squad coverage, but this is a un-usable perk, since Dell will do nothing except refer you to Best Buy, who will insist on taking the laptop from you for an indeterminate period (last time it was for 2 months, with them saying they couldn't fix it, and provided another faulty replacement). I swear.. I had soo many battery problems with my Dell Inspiron 1545 laptop. It's not even two years old and the battery life was completely dead (after a year) so I ended up buying a new battery that has a 6 hour battery life, but realized my laptop still said "plugged in, not charging" for my new battery.
Outraged.. I searched everything I could to solve this
problem. No luck until I end up buying this charger. Figured out the Dell website sells these too, except for a price over $60. Not what I expected so I Amazoned it up and TA-DAA!- I found it and when I received it after 5 days from ordering it- I plugged it into my laptop and miraculously my laptop is finally charging
No problems and it has been over a month or so for me.
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED for Dell users with the "PLUGGED IN, BUT NOT CHARGING" laptop battery problem. You will definitely save $$ purchasing it here through Amazon.

I bought this for my wife, after our kitties damaged the plug that came with her laptop. It worked for about a month, and suddenly quit. No warning, no pyrotechnics or technological histrionics. She simply found the battery on her computer had inexplicably dropped to 50% because the plug in the wall abruptly ceased to supply power from the outlet. This was right before a major trip we were taking, and losing her travel computer without any warning was inconvenient to say the least. This product is nice if you want an inexpensive means to hold on to your laptop until you can locate and afford a more reliable product. My wife ended up going back to the original brand name option for the next replacement.

The Dell Vostro V13 is a light weight laptop with a slim profile. This makes it ideal to carry around in backpack or handle easily by hand. The 6 cell battery will get you about 2-2.5 hrs on full brightness with sporadic usage such as internet surfing, office work and light video watching. You might be able to squeeze a 2hr video with full brightness on. Now, I was able to get the most battery time turning down the brightness all the way. This netted about 4hrs of battery life with internet surfing, office work and video watching. I primarily use it for school and around the house. Its great to have such a light and slim laptop that does all things well. There is no CDROM Drive but that I wouldn't say is a negative thing. All of the port connections are on the back. I also have hooked this up to my 55in HDTV via VGA and its looks great. I have maximized internet videos and the playback was smooth all the way. I paid around $430 after taxes and now its down to $349 on the Dell Site (4/12/11). That is an even better price for what you get in the end.

The first thing to mention is that these units are disappearing rapidly as inventory lowers and Dell stopped production as of May 1, 2011. There were specials on for over a month as Dell popped them out at a ridiculously low $350 US, presumably using the existing tooling until a new model went into production. Like a fool, all my instincts told me I should have bought a few and after receiving mine on May 6th, I realized that I should have bought a dozen at that price.
Well I managed to get one for myself (at least) and here is the info that should assist any and everyone in deciding if they should buy one.
Obviously it's difficult to accept paying so much more than when it was on special, but I will attempt to evaluate it, given the present price of $600.
It's fairly simple to make comparisons to other 13.3 inch Ultra Slims and from that info, you can decide for yourself if this is the most appealing of the group.
Since the specs are sparse on Amazon, here are the basics. An Intel ULV (Ultra Low Voltage) CPU SU7300, 2 gigs of DDR3 ram and a 320 gig 7200 rpm hard drive. None of the units in this class (Acer, Asus, Toshiba, etc) have dedicated expensive high level graphics cards built in and they all share similar video performance.(Intel HD Series 4 graphics)
So what would make you choose the V13 over the others?
2 things.....
1) The looks, build, slimness, brushed aluminum finish, etc
2) The superior speed from having a 7200 rpm hard drive.
A 7200 rpm drive is approximately 50% faster in performance than a 5400 model, however that does not translate into 50% more performance across the board. Booting up and shutting down will be faster as will all applications that are opened for the first time in a given session. Once these apps/programs are in the cache, the competitive machines with their slower drives should open apps as quickly as this Dell.
As an example, after booting up, let's say 15 seconds after arriving at your desktop image, the V13 might open Internet Explorer to a simple website like google.com, in 3 seconds flat, and then 1 second each subsequent time, whereas the 5400 rpm models from the competition might take 6 seconds the first time, but will also open it in 1 second, the second time and all subsequent times.
One might argue that is not enough to sway you away from other brands, but bear in mind that all apps opened for the first time in a session, will open a lot faster with the V13 than the others, so when you open Firefox, Google Earth, Microsoft Word and all others, you will not be made to wait as long as you would with the 5400 rpm models.
Hopefully, that issue is now 100% clear and we can move onto establishing whether it is the machine for YOU.
If you are reading this review, I presume it is because you have an interest in purchasing this model and there is no reason that we can't establish the pros and cons for you, well enough for you to make a good sound decision, sight unseen.
As you may know by now, it is the slimmest koolest looking Ultra Slim 13.3 incher on the market, bar none.
If you like the idea of having a kool looking machine that occupies so little space and is so easy to move around
(it's actually thinner than an iPad 1), this is probably the dream machine for you, but we need to look at one other aspect, performance vs battery life.
Competitive models like the now discontinued Toshiba T135, will get you 50% more battery life in exchange for the slightly slower performance. The V13 not only draws a bit more power because of its higher performance hard drive, but it also has a smaller battery, in order to fit into such a small slim case.
In short, in power saving settings, you will get 4 hours of service if your unit is well tweaked and you do not over burden it.
For example, I can have Yahoo Messenger, Live Messenger and Skype on, whilst viewing 4 internet pages, and I will get 4 hours of usage.
If you watch video or listen to music, the battery will run out a lot faster, as much as twice as fast.
If you are a frequent traveler, I suggest you consider the Asus/Toshiba or Acer models with longer battery life. The performance from those machines is quite acceptable and the battery life is fantastic.
If you are satisfied with a potential 4 hours of battery life and love the idea of having the koolest looking laptop around, the V13 is the machine for you.
People just go googoo gaga over it, when you hand it to them in their hands.
The easy portability is unsurpassed in its class.
So here is the price you will pay for having the koolest, slimmest, metal construction 13.3 incher with the fastest performance.
You will lose battery life as mentioned above, and some ports.
The V13 has only 2 USB ports and does not have an HDMI out for hooking up to your TV.
It does have Bluetooth which may come in handy for some folks, a VGA out, sound out and microphone in, an SD card reader, an Ethernet port and that's it.
There may come a time when you would like to use an external DVD or hard drive that requires both of your USB ports, so you wouldn't even have one to spare for your mouse, for example.
Personally, I have no problems with what I lose as compared to the competition's models, in order to get this fantastic form factor and the superior performance.
Others may disagree and with good reason, specially if additional ports are essential to them and if longer battery life is a critical factor.
If you have now decided that you want a V13, do not waste any time as the price will continue to go up until there are none left.

I picked this up at an office superstore while on vacation because I left my laptop charger at home. The user manual was short and straightforward, and I had no problem choosing the right adapter plug for my one year old Acer laptop. The Targus web site also has an extensive compatability application to help you choose which adapter plug to use for your laptop (links are in the manual or just go to Targus.com and browse around). The charger with adapter plug seems to be sturdy and well constructed and worked flawlessly for me for the week I needed it. The power brick stayed cool and was completely silent as it should be. One thing I like about this universal laptop charger is that the adapter plugs are keyed so they can only attach to the DC power supply cord one way, thus eliminating the possibility of reversing the polarity by accident and potentially frying your laptop. This may be a common feature of more recent universal laptop chargers, but some older units I considered required you to determine the correct polarity, thus introducing the potential for accidentally using the incorrect polarity. The Targus charger also does not have a manual adjustment for the output voltage, but adjusts automatically, again reducing the potential for human error.

This laptop was not worth the money when it was new. This laptop replaced my old dell latitude C640.
It's an OK laptop that does the job. But I would agree with the other reviewed that "it should run faster" considering the specs. In comparing the specs vs. my old C640, it's got double the memory, double the CPU, double the harddrive, etc... yet I only see a marginal performance improvement. I have run windows XP, Vista, and wasn't particularly impressed with the performance of either of them. I'm running 2003 server and it seems to be better now. There is a lot of harddrive noise. There is also a problem with feedback on my telephone when I get close to the computer... presumably due to a faulty ground somewhere on the laptop. It's also a bit heavier then I would like.
On the pro side, the screen is nice and big, the keyboard is big and comfortable, has 4 USB ports, and came with 2 batteries (one of which has already died).

This machine is extremely durable. Despite what others might say about it running apps slowly, they don't know how to manage their OS. This machine can run any application, including Adobe Creative Suite apps well. Sure, it's not the fastest thing on the market, but it's a 2.0 dual core CPU, it's a great deal, and for any student/office person trying to save money while still getting things done, it's a great buy. The hardware holds up great, and don't let others tell you it's slow because of how they treat their OS.

Actually, I bought this directly from Dell. Same model. I read another review on this laptop here, and I'm very puzzled by the response. No mention of the laptop itself, just complaints about certain electronic parts in the laptop itself.
Unboxing, it came out looking beautiful. Brushed aluminum. Solid solid feel. Since I bought from the consumer side and not the government side, where I usually do all my shopping, the computer did come with bloatware. I uninstalled over half of all the programs in the Uninstall control panel. All the dell online stuff, the backup stuff, photo stuff, etc.
Then I optimized using MSCONFIG which programs start up. This machine boots fast and boy is it nice. Bright screen, and what I really like about it is the backlit keys. I haven't figured out yet how to extend the time the keys stay lit. If I'm reading something, after a couple minutes the keys will go out. Then I tap the space key and they light up again. Nice soft white flourescent color. Very modern and classy looking.
Dell has been at this for a long time and they really know what they're doing. This is a very solid, fast performer. Just do like I did and remove all the bloateware before using it. I removed MacAfee right off the bat and installed Avast Free version. Been using it for years, never lost an OS because of viruses.
The sound is incredible. Wow, clear, super heavy bass lines. The sound through headphones is excellent, but the sound coming from the laptop itself will really amaze you.
I've been using this for about a month and I love it more than my Dell desktop at work. The screen is really bright and high resolution. You can get a lot of text and windows on this screen. Super clear too, I think it's LED.
Believe me, this is money well spent. You won't find a better deal.

It's been 1 day and my power supply stopped working.
I called customer care but it's going to take almost 1 week to replace it.
and my laptop battery died right now so I cannot use it anymore.
I googled it and I found that there are a lot of people who has same issue.
Never buy this and never trust dell.

I was running Windows 2000 on my old Dell Precision Workstation; that I purchased back in 2001. I had upgraded it as far as it would go (RAM wise). It was working OK; but I had been noticing that more and more software offerings, were not including W2K in their list of OS they were certified to work with. My dilemma; do I try and upgrade my existing computer to Windows XP or newer OS, or do I replace my machine
I have had experiences in the past with trying to upgrade to a newer OS and all have had disastrous results I live on a very limited income, so a new machine was out of the question. Enter Amazon and their amazing deals
I found this refurbished machine, with a "fresh version" of Windows XP Professional; Service Pack 3 (meaning, no annoying garbage advertisement software that you get when you order a new machine from whomever and can never seem to totally get rid of!). It had everything I wanted, 2GB of RAM and a 250GB hard-drive. I think the motherboard speed must be a lot faster than the old machine. This one runs way faster than the old and I was able to move everything from the old to the new with a transfer program.
I would definitely recommend this vendor. The machine was very well packed and arrived very quickly. It did not come with a CD burner, so I wanted to take the one from my old machine and install in this one. The case on the replacement machine has a "rounded" trim piece on the front and I couldn't find one anywhere on the net, so I e-mailed the vendor to see if they knew where I could get one. Immediately they e-mailed me back to see if I could take a photo of what I was describing. I did and she e-mailed me back photos of what they had and told me they would ship it to me for free. Now that's excellent customer service
I am very pleased and satisfied with my purchase and 5 stars is not good enough to rate my experience!

i am satisfied with this towers capability, its fast and its just as seller described. dont mind the casing whats under the casing is nothing but power i have tested this with applications that is a processor and memory hauler and it stood its grounds, overall i made a good purchase on this desktop and i would recommend it.

I want others to know how happy I am with my new laptop. I needed to have wifi computer access for a trip I had to make. I decided a laptop would be the only way and purchased it from Amazon. I have purchased other items from them before and have always been pleased with my purchases. This item was sold through a company named Tampa Laptops in Tampa, Fla. The computer arrived in great condition, however when I shipped it to my travel location it was damaged during that shipment. I contacted Tampa Laptop and they repaired it within 2 days and shipped it back. Zack at Tampa Laptop was great. Due to their service and helpfulness, I would not only purchase from them again but strongly recommend them for any laptop purchase or service.

So far so good. I am very impressed with the performance and speed. I replaced an HP computer bought new 4 years ago, and believe me this is an upgrade from that. I did have to load anti virus, I prefer Trend Micro Internet Security. I use the computer for bill paying, e-mail, and my medical records. I plan on buying a extended service policy from Square Trade. You can't go wrong buying from Tampa-Laptops.

Since there are no reviews for this product I had to buy it blindfolded. So let me be the first person to confirm, this far the product has worked well and the most important thing: it IS indeed an original Dell battery. Also, the battery arrived in 2 days and in good conditions, even though the packaging was cheap, an unsealed little box and a little plastic bag for the battery, but it works fine. I just thought that since I've read complaints about other batteries, it would be helpful for people to know this is an original Dell battery (or so it seems, it looks like the one on the picture) and it was shipped in good conditions. If the product fails someday, be sure I'll come back to edit this review.

This is a correction of the previous review of same item. For some unexplainable reason, the battery started charging after a few days. Please disregard the first critical review. Brilliant Store was quick to respond with directions for return/refund. I highly recommend them. My apologies.

I own a Dell E1505 laptop computer. The original battery did not last very long and since I have been using my laptop as a portable 'desktop' computer. Recently I decided to purchase a new batter as my travel frequency has gone up. I normally purchase items from Amazon with good to excellent feedback. So I was comparing the 9-cell battery by Tavas with the one by New Trent and I ended up purchased the one from Tavas as it had a better rating (7200mAh vs 6600mAh) and is slightly cheaper because I had to pay tax if I ordered the one by New Trent.
The battery arrived and immediately I put the battery to test. Boom it was not working. The computer BIOS complained that it does not recognize the battery. But when I booted into Windows I can see the battery meter displayed about 52% charge and I can read the battery ID (don't remember the exact ID No.) and such but apparently the battery is not charging. I removed the power cord and the computer was still on so the battery was actually supplying power to the laptop. When I plug the power cord back, the little power cord icon was showing that the battery was charging but after a few minutes the charging icon disappeared so again the battery was sitting idle.
I called Dell technical support and was advised to only buy Dell battery. Finally they told me that the issue can be fixed by flashing (the BIOS) but I have to purchase a one time support which would cost me $59.95 because my laptop is out of warranty support. So I decide to return the battery since Amazon offers a easy return process.
I then reorder the 9-cell battery by New Trent. It took only three to four days for the battery to arrive and again I immediately plugged in the battery for a test. The BIOS did not even notice that there was a new battery. Every thing just worked as my original battery. I booted into Windows and found that the battery was charging normally. This battery, when fully charged, gives me about 4 to 5 hours run time with my laptop set for Maximum Battery (as opposed to Maximum Performance). So far I am very happy with this battery but I only own it for less then two days. BTW, the battery is rated at 7200mAH even though the ad on Amazon says the battery is rated at 6600mAH.

With the original battery in my Dell Inspiron 1501 worn out -- only about 10 minutes of runtime before it would require recharge, and with the computer giving me constant messages that the battery needs to be replaced, I went to Dell to buy a replacement. I was shocked to find that a new Dell battery would cost nearly $150! While uncertain about buying an "aftermarket" battery, I researched quite a bit, looking at various batteries, and after reading a number of excellent reviews for New Trent products, I decided to purchase one. The battery arrived promptly, I installed it today, and my Dell immediately recognized the battery and began charging it. Given that I have just received the battery, I am not yet sure what the full run time will be -- as I have not yet discharged it. However, after some of the bad experiences I learned of during my research with folks who bough other brands of batteries from other companies, I am very pleased with the New Trent product. And, you can't beat the price -- less than 1/3 the cost of a new Dell battery! Finally, I also checked out New Trent's website, and spoke with the company on the phone with some questions, and they were incredibly helpful and kind, and really stood behind their product. I do not hesitate at all to recommend this company, and I will absolutely return to New Trent the next time I need a laptop battery.
