This is a first generation I5 laptop, 4Gb of memory, 4-Watt SRS-enhanced 2.0 Integrated Stereo Speakers with discrete tweeters, 66 whr 9 cell battery, slot loading dvdr burner, a 500gb 7200 rpm disk drive, backlit keyboard, integrated webcam, integrated Bluetooth support, and is part of the Studio line of laptops. The Studio 15Z was designed as a Best Buy exclusive, but is now sold by others.
Dell discontinued the entire line of Studio laptops, in May. I suspect that Dell discontinued the Studio line because it was eating into profit margins of the XPS line of laptops. I purchased this computer mainly because of the backlit keyboard. I recently picked up this notebook new, for $489 from a major local retailer. Now with the Studio line discontinued, be prepared to spend $900+ to get a XPS laptop with a backlit keyboard!
Why is this laptop so nice? Because it was built to Best Buy's specifications as a Best Buy exclusive offering. Best Buy talked to their customers and asked them what they wanted in a laptop. Dell then built the Studio 15Z to Best Buy's specifications. The laptop with an I5 processor is fast, has a sleek design and is less than 1" thick, and is a real pleasure to use. The main feature that I was looking for was the backlit keyboard and a fast Intel processor. A backlit keyboard is a feature this usually is reserved for the higher priced line of laptops. This laptop also comes standard with a 2 year Dell mail in warranty. The version I purchased has the integrated graphics chip. This is a good laptop for home use, students, and small business owners. The laptop weights 5.4 pounds and is very thin and quite an attractive laptop. The keys and touch pad are very responsive. This is not a gaming machine. The computer also comes with Microsoft Office starter edition, which means you will have basic Microsoft Word and Excel with advertisements.
On some Studio laptops a backlit keyboard is a build option. In the case of the Studio 15Z the backlit keyboard is a standard feature, ie. all Studio 15Z's will have one!
Best Buy has offered this laptop with a 2.26 or a 2.4 Ghz processor and either built in graphcs or an ATI Mobility Radeon(tm) HD 4570 graphics card. Most retailers are offering the 2.4 ghz model with built in graphics. In June Dell offered an updated version of the Studio 15Z as part of their fire sale. The June offering from the Dell website came with a faster processor i5-480M (2.66GHz) and the ATI Mobility Radeon(tm) HD 4570 graphics card and only a 1 year basic warranty.
I do a lot of Internet surfing late at night when I am in the family room, and can't see the keys in a dimly lit room. This computer is fast and the keyboard has a nice feel to it. If your looking for a reasonable priced laptop that has an Intel I5 processor with a backlit keyboard this computer is a great deal. I purchased the computer with my AmEx card which will give me an additional year of warrenty after the Dell warrenty expires for a total of 3 years. So this will protect me from any potental major hardware failures, should they occur.
I really like this laptop but there are 2 things that I don't like - There is no disk activity led on the laptop that lets me know when the disk drive is being accessed. Also the disk drive is mounted internal to the computer underneath the keyboard. This will require disassembly of the computer in order to replace the disk drive.

Warning of items sold by Data Master LLC or Better Choice Online. Dell studio 15z sold as new on line in description and on invoice, but came shipped in plain packaging, not manufacturer original packaging. and had figerprints on keyboard, no plastic wrap on screen or laptop as all new laptops do.
